Mighty Blighty Pub Stop: Part 2

Mighty Blighty Pub Stop: a quick guide to a few great pubs and brews from England.

Next stop: The Old Goat in Fulwell…a popular French Gastro-pub down the road from Twickenham, the home of Rugby…so not surprising that there’s rugby match loud and proud on the TV. Previously named The Fulwell Arms, it was shut down refurbished, prettied and renamed The Old Goat in 2005 when property prices in the area were on the up. It was a sad time when our local “haunts” were being bought out and gutted of all their crusty old paintings, dusty knick-knacks, worn carpets and nicotine stained walls. The walls were re-painted battleship grey with new tables and shiny taps…so many of our pubs were transformed overnight, all looking the same and soulless, although The Goat is one of the few that still has a little charm left to it and I’m glad to hear that they still do the best Roast dinner EVER on Sundays! Sadly it’s not Sunday, but on the plus side they have a greatest selection of English, French and Belgian Beers going and have regular tastings interesting new brews to try.

Mike orders a of classic Greene King IPA, and Rachel asks for a white wine spritzer while I’m super drawn to the new Floris Frambiose (Raspberry) beer on tap from the Belgian brewers Brouwerij Huyghe. I know it’s going to be a sweet one, to be paired with a chocolate desert rather than the fancy French style chicken dish I’ve ordered, but I’m so excited! Its a dark cherry colour and so full of flavour. Interestingly not as sweet as the Fruli beer by the same brewers, being a lot sharper and tangy…I’m just sad that I didn’t have room in my belly for another glass of it with a desert!
