Real People Real Stories: Pub crawl for a keg of real ale!

London, England 1974
Pub Crawl for a Trophy, a keg of real ale! by Alan Copplestone

In the seventies ‘Young’s Brewery’ in Wandsworth South London (Young’s has brewed real ale for over 400 years) offered a keg of real ale if you had a pint in each of their pubs, in and around London, about 150 pubs.

My friend Tony and I heard of this offer at our local ‘The Dulwich Woodhouse’, we looked at this as a win-win situation, we liked pubs, we liked real ale, we planned our mission and received our pub crawl passports.

Riding buses, trains, the underground and walking, we visited 10-15 pubs a week, we were young and fit football players, chatting up the girls, some nights the plan fell apart and we would just manage one pub and way too many beers.

It wasn’t easy, but we toughed it out and received our kegs, that weekend our football club won the cup, the two kegs were gone in two hours.
