Mighty Blighty Pub Stop: a quick guide to a few great pubs and brews from England.

Next Stop: The White Cross, Richmond is a Traditional Historic Riverside Pub, in a fantastic location in the centre of the town, overlooking Richmond Bridge. A great place to meet, and drink Award Winning Real Ales and beers. There is a large heated patio at the front of the pub that overlooks the river, so it’s a great place to meet friends especially if some of them smoke. The bar is upstairs a level so to be high enough to be safe from flooding from the river. We climb upwards to the bar where we’re served in an instant – very rare for a pub like this on a Saturday evening! I see my favourite lager, Staropramen, on tap; a traditional Czech lager, crisp and gold with a real bite. It seems to be coming more popular in pubs here as an alternative to Stella Artois…thank god. If you’re ever unlucky enough to try a pint of Stella (aka Wife Beater) in England you’ll know why – let’s just say that it’s not quite as fresh tasting as Canadian brewed Stella. Staropramen was the no.1 choice for most of us, being a great session lager. A few of my friends also chose the traditional Bombardier English Bitter “The Drink of England”; a smooth well balanced ale and another great session brew. It’s a point of pride, especially in a traditional pub like this with the St Georges flag splashed over the pint glass and bar tap. Traditional ale is starting to become more fashionable to drink, and it’s nice to see quite a few ladies drinking it in place of their usual Pimms and lemonade, hooray!
